Franklin walked into the Thalhimers Department Store in downtown Richmond, Va., the morning of Feb. 22, 1960, a minister’s son from Brooklyn and a junior at nearby Virginia Union University. Once inside, he went to the Richmond Room restaurant and asked to be served.
